Il giorno di San Martino è sempre stato atteso dai contadini della nostra zona come il momento del rendiconto e del bilancio di tutta la stagione agricola. I contratti stipulati tra coloni e proprietari delle terre, “i paroni”, avevano termine a novembre, così come entro quel giorno dovevano essere saldati i conti e pagati i canoni.
Così il giorno di S. Martino concludeva il lavoro di tutti i protagonisti della vita contadina: coloni, fittabili, fattori e proprietari potevano a quella data trarre il bilancio dell’anno di attività. D’altro canto il rinnovo dei vecchi contratti, e la stipulazione dei nuovi, doveva essere fatta quando ancora la terra si prestava ad essere lavorata e seminata per la stagione successiva.
Ai coloni in particolare S. Martino poteva non essere affatto amico: frequenti erano i casi di scissione dei contratti agrari, a causa sia di insuccessi nel raccolto che di desiderio di migliorare le proprie condizioni. Ed allora tutta la famiglia colonica traslocava, magari da un cortile all’altro dello stesso paese, o anche da una zona all’altra della pianura, portando le poche masserizie che avrebbero arredato la nuova casa.
Fare “san martino” divenne così espressione proverbiale, ed il continuo bisogno di traslocare, in un popolo tradizionalmente legato alle proprie radici, non aveva certo un significato positivo. Anzi, in alcuni periodi, quando i raccolti non erano stati dei migliori riducevano i contadini alla miseria, S. Martino era atteso con terrore, perchè poteva significare la perdita dell’alloggio e dei pochi beni di cui la famiglia disponeva.
Ma la storia del Santo che ha segnato le tradizioni contadine parte da molto distante tra leggenda e qualche documento. Martino nacque intorno al 316-17 a Sabaria Sicca, l’odierna Szombathely, in Ungheria. Trascorse la sua infanzia a Pavia, la città dove fu trasferito suo padre per ragioni militari.
Martino, incontrò un mendicante seminudo per strada. Vedendolo molto sofferente per il freddo, Martino, decise di compiere un gesto di solidarietà e generosità: tagliò in due il suo mantello con la sua spada e ne condivise una metà con l’uomo. La notte seguente, a Martino, comparve in sogno Gesù che indossava la metà del suo mantello militare e che disse agli angeli che un soldato dell’esercito romano, neanche battezzato, lo aveva vestito. Una volta sveglio Martino vide che il suo mantello era integro e, stupito, lo conservò come reliquia.
Questo episodio colpì così tanto Martino che la Pasqua successiva decise di battezzarsi e diventare, così, cristiano e dopo vent’anni nell’esercito, a quarant’anni, decise di lasciare la carriera militare e dedicare la sua vita alla fede e alla lotta contro l’eresia ariana. Dopo un periodo da eremita e da monaco, fondò un monastero e divenne vescovo di Tours dedicando la sua vita alla professione della fede.
Martino morì l’8 novembre del 397 a Candes-Saint-Martin e, oggi, viene festeggiato l’11 novembre, giorno del suo funerale.
